Metaverse

The metaverse is the convergence of two ideas that have been around for many years: virtual reality and a digital second life.

For decades, technologists have dreamed of an era when our virtual lives play as important a role as our physical realities. In theory, we would spend lots of time interacting with our friends and colleagues in virtual space. As a result, we would spend money there, too, on outfits and objects for our digital avatars.

In what techies like Mr. Zuckerberg call the metaverse, virtual reality serves as a computing platform for living a second life online. In virtual reality, you wear a headset that immerses you in a 3-D environment. You carry motion-sensing controllers to interact with virtual objects and use a microphone to communicate with others.

Matthew Ball, a venture capitalist who has written extensively about the topic, said the metaverse represented the fourth wave to computers, following mainframe computing, personal computing and mobile computing.

Marketing Possibilities In The Metaverse

If you’re not involved in areas such as cryptocurrency, gaming or VR, you may think that the metaverse has nothing to do with you. However, any major trends are bound to influence the realms of business and marketing. The following are some ways that any business might benefit from getting involved.

• Create your own NFT to raise brand awareness (e.g., create an NFT with your logo) or to promote a product. If you don’t know anything about NFTs, it may seem like a stretch to create your own. However, the technology is rapidly advancing and a simple search will take you to sites that explain the process. Just like it’s now fairly easy for non-techies to create their own apps (or outsource the process), it’s getting simple for anyone to create NFTs.

  • Be alert for opportunities in Facebook’s Meta offerings. Although Facebook is still in the early stages of its Meta transition, you can be sure that it will involve commerce and advertising at some point. You may be able to create Facebook Ads in the metaverse, build your own virtual store or create events such as immersive conferences.
